Nurses Embrace Social and Digital Media Resources- Johnson & Johnson

Recent studies and research indicate seasoned nurses and new nursing students are finding practical uses for social and digital media in schools and workplaces.

Top Free Presentation Software
Google Drive: Presentation (Web)
Like any good office suite, Google Drive has the three top tools: a word processor, a spreadsheet, and of course, a presentation package that we'll call Presentation even though it doesn't seem to have a specific name. Coupled with the service's online storage capabilities, it's a hard package to beat.
Flexibility abounds. You can upload PowerPoint PPT files to Google Drive Presentation for editing or playback, or export the Google Drive formatted files to PPT format (or PDF) as needed to work with other systems. Creating a slide deck from scratch? You choose from 20 visual themes (what PowerPoint calls templates) that work for screens running 4:3, 16:9, or 16:10 ratios. Inside a slide, you can draw shapes, create tables, link shapes, enter un-seen comments, and more.
Perhaps most useful is the collaboration—multiple users in multiple locations can work on the slides simultaneously (something Drive also does with aplomb with word processing and spreadsheet documents). A revision history tracks changes so you can always find out who screwed up what. And you never have to click "save" to ensure your changes are permanent.
Top Free Software Picks - Google Drive Presentations
Haiku Deck (Web, iOS)
One of our Top 100 Websites from 2013, Haiku Deck is well worth considering for all it can and can't and won't do. Use it on the Web or via an iPad-specific app to create some incredibly well-designed slides for your next presentation, or as they prefer to call it, your next "story." You can sign in with a Facebook or Twitter account.
As it states in an introductory deck of slides, Haiku Deck is shooing for 33 percent simplicity, 33 percent beauty, and 34 percent fun (as much fun as prepping for a meeting can be, anyway). Haiku Deck stresses the use of art and imagery, making it a must for designers—but it provides access to 35 million pieces of free stock art to go with six included themes. You can purchase more.
Once you're done creating a Haiku Deck, showing it is easiest with an iPad, but the decks are also embeddable into sites (see the deck below as an example). They can also be exported into PowerPoint and KeyNote formats, though Haiku Deck would prefer you publish your deck on their site, making it public (the best of them end up in the Haiku Deck Gallery), but you can restrict the audience or make it totally private as desired.
Prezi (Web)
The biggest downside to Prezi is that its freedom has limits: you can only make Prezis that are public, and they can only be 100MB in size, unless you pay. But oh what fun they can be—Prezi has, hands down, the most unique transitions, what PCMag called an "animated visual feast unlike the usual boring set of bullet points" in our 2010 review. That hasn't changed. Everything in the presentation is on one, giant slide—you just jump from spot to spot.
Zoho Show (Web, iOS, Android)
Zoho's suite of tools never seems to get enough credit, but its Show presentation tool deserves a lot of praise. Part of the free suite with 5GB of space (you can get 50x more if you have a group of users paying $5/month per user), Show is on the Web so presentations are available everywhere. It also has PPT import/export, a rich set of tools for slide creation and changes, integrated photo editing, and the ability to broadcast a presentation to other locations.
SlideDog (Windows)
Oh you SlideDog (get it?). This Windows software isn't strictly for creating presentations, but it does something different by supporting multiple kinds of presentation files and other formats (like PDFs, Prezi files, video, images, you name it). You drag them all into SlideDog and reorder them to make a "presentation playlist" that can play all at once, or as you command.
PowToon (Web)
PowToon creates not only slidedecks but also promotional or informational videos to share. The free version sticks a watermark on your work, and it's a hefty $19 a month minimum to get rid of it! But for free you can get a five-minute preso video—you don't even have to be in the room to give the talk.
emaze (Web)
Another Web-based presentation tool that auto-saves and looks great? Sounds familiar, but emaze also throws in some "3D" templates, so when you replace the place-holder text you'll get a nice visual effect. The whole site is built on HTML5 so there's no Flash issues, and it works on the Web browser of any device, from PCs down to phones. Here's an example from emaze (yes, you can embed and share presos where you like):
Powered by emaze
PowerPoint Web App (Web)
PowerPoint among the PowerPoint alternatives? Well, unlike the full version that comes with Microsoft Office, the stripped-down PowerPoint Web app handles your PPTs with ease, which shouldn't be a surprise. You'll want a browser with SilverLight installed, and that probably means using IE for Windows most of the time. You won't find every feature of the desktop version, but you will be able to save directly to your SkyDrive (soon to be OneDrive) account for access anywhere.
Impress (Windows, Mac, Linux)
Once upon a time, Impress was the presentation tool of OpenOffice.org. But now that OoO, as it was called, is dead, the open-source office suite has forked into other suites including Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice. And both include Impress, the free slide-deck creator with full PPT compatibility. All the suite's apps (you can't get them separately) basically look and act much like Microsoft Office from a decade ago. And that's not a bad thing, but you're not going to get any fancy video or photo editing.
Presentation Free 2013 (Windows, iOS, Android)
Want to have software that mimics a newer version of PowerPoint—say with the ribbon interface? Kingsoft's Presentation Free does just that. It offers plenty of templates, colors, and animations to make any speaker happy if they need the extra flash. Import of PPTX files is a breeze, but it only outputs the older PPT format or its own, or just converts slide show files to PDF.

  Animated Screen Captures:

using MAC/PC
Screen capture is terrific for video tutorials.  When preparing to do a screen capture project, you need to identify where you will place your video.  Each hosting site has its own acceptable video formats. Here are some example of file formats for possible places you may upload your screen capture video:

Hosting
File Formats
Youtube
.mpeg4, .avi, .mpegs, .wmv, .flv
Blackboard
.avi, .mov, .ram (real Movie Player)
Flickr
AVI (Proprietary codecs may not work), WMV, MOV (AVID or other proprietary
codecs may not work), MPEG (1, 2, and 4), 3gp, M2TS, OGG, OGV
Wordpress
.mp4, .m4v (MPEG-4), .mov (QuickTime), .wmv (Windows Media Video), .avi
.mpg, .ogv (Ogg), .3gp (3GPP), .3g2 (3GPP2)
Vimeo
asf, asx, avi, divx, dv, dvx, m4v, mov, mp4, mpeg, mpg, qt, wmv, 3g2, 3gp, 3ivx
and 3vx
Before you start looking for screen capture software to do your capture project, you need to answer a few questions:
·       Will the video be uploaded directly to a hosting site?
·       Will you need to edit it first?
·       Will your screen capture video need audio?
·       Will you record audio while you are capturing the screen?
·       Will you add audio to it later?
The answers to the questions will determine what video capture and/or editing software can be used to accomplish your goal.
The last question and very important question is: Are you using a MAC or a PC?  Not all softwares are available for both.  Some available for both, don’t have all the same features in both.  Being a MAC user, I wanted to identify the screen capture software can be used on MAC.
Screen Capture Software that can be used on MAC are:

Lessons Learned

Before you begin, you need to have a plan.  A good project is reflective of a good plan.  The suggested process is as follows:
There are two pieces to creating the screen capture video for a lesson:
1.     The content of the lesson and how it would be laid out and accessed.
2.     The software to use in its creation.
3.   Map  out the creation and delivery plan.  This requires you to determine what file formats are supported in various hosting options.  Within each hosting site it is not always easy to locate information regarding the file formats supported.
4.  After the plan is complete, it is time to create.

IBM Virtual Healthcare Island.

The island is a unique, three-dimensional representation of the challenges facing today's healthcare industry and the role information technology will play in transforming global healthcare-delivery to meet patient needs.

The IBM Virtual Healthcare Island is designed with a futuristic atmosphere and provides visitors with an interactive demonstration of IBM’s open-standards-based Health Information Exchange (HIE) architecture. Working with project leads in the U.S., the island was designed and built by an all-IBM-India team.

Starting from the patient’s home, they create their own Personal Health Records (PHRs) in a secure and private environment and watch as it is incorporated into an array of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems that can be used at various medical facilities. As they move from one island station to the next, they experience how the development of a totally integrated and interoperable longitudinal Electronic Health Record (EHR) is used within a highly secured network that allows access only by patient-authorized providers and family members.

IBM’s Healthcare & Life Sciences (HCLS) Industry will continue to develop the new island in months to come.  The island can perform as a virtually “always on” demonstration tool for IBM’s sales personnel.  A video version of the island is also under production.

This is one of many examples that can enhance healthcare, education and practice virtually.

Survey Shows Health Research Popular in Social Media

A survey of 1,600 adults shows considerable use of social media for health care purposes.

  • 42% percent of respondents have used social media to access consumer reviews of treatments or physicians, 30 percent have supported a health cause, 25 percent have posted content about their own health experiences and 20 percent have joined a health forum or community, according to the Health Research Institute of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
The use of social media for health care consumers also could extend to decision making on specific health issues, according to respondents. Forty-five percent said information they found via social media would affect decisions to seek a second opinion; more than 40 percent said information would affect the way they coped with a chronic condition or how they approach diet and exercise.

PWC also evaluated social media activity of 10 health care companies that are members of the eHealth Initiative advocacy group, finding that the businesses have social media initiatives but considerably lag behind community sites. “In fact, community sites had 24 times more social media activity on average than any of the health industry companies over that one-week timeframe,” according to the consultancy. Survey results are available here.

Health Information Literacy: Interdisciplinary Advocacy

The popular media and professional journals alike are increasingly carrying reports and studies of the difficulties and frustrations health professionals and patients face in coping with the barrage of available information in a way that results in informed health care decisions.

There is a huge need to bring sense to the information universe for improved health. Here are some resources:

3 Ways to Quickly Create Excellent Presentations Online

By / June 21, 2008 10:31 AM

Here is the link to the above about online presentation using one of the web 2.0 tools mentioned at http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/4_ways_to_quickly_create_excellenct_presentations_online.php#more:

Zoho Show 2.0 is a presentation creation service from Zoho, the makers of a host of online productivity and collaboration apps. Zoho Show does a fantastic job of featuring the best and most necessary features for creating presentations on the fly. There are a plethora of themes available to get you started and many options for customizing your presentations including Master Styles for Master slides, clipart, and Zoho Chat integration. Check out our more in-depth review of the service here.

If you're a user of the Google Docs online service you can use the service to create presentations on the fly. While there are theme and insert options available for both images and videos, you'll have a tougher time than most of the other pics due to Google's simplistic style. There are not many options available and the ones that are have quite a few limitations that other services don't.

SlideRocket is an amazing presentation creator and arguably the best of the bunch. I'm not going to say any more than that and instead direct you to our review of SlideRocket and the SlideRocket product tour.

  Tools for teachers

There are thousands of resources to prepare students for their classes this fall. However, back-to-school time is a busy period for another group that doesn't have nearly as much help.
I'm talking about teachers, of course! They're about to take on a whole new group of students - which means plenty of brand-new challenges! I combed the Web to find some awesome sites made specifically for educators.
Each one is a treasure trove of resources. No matter what the grade level, you'll find new ways reach your students. Parents should check out these sites, too. They're a fabulous way to connect with educators and go hands-on with your student's learning.
Sophia - This tutoring site offers you a great opportunity to digitize your classroom. It takes time-consuming lectures and replaces them with digital tutorials. Your students will have on-demand access to your teachings when they're doing homework.
The site calls it "flipping" your classroom. It says the program has raised grades for more than 85 percent of the teachers that use it. You can upload your own videos to describe a topic or use one of the 25,000 already on the site.
Even if you don't want to go all-in on the site, you can still use the lectures. They'll show you multiple ways of explaining complex topics.
Teacher's Corner - Perhaps you like a more traditional method of educating. That's fine - this site offers countless lesson plans and activities. You'll find everything from homework assignments to in-depth projects for your students.
The site stays updated with time-sensitive lessons. Right now, you can head to the site and find Olympic-themed lesson plans! Your students will be impressed at how you stay on the cutting edge of current events.
Plus, there's a bustling community of educators on the site. Chat with educators from all over the world to find new ways to tackle the subject you teach.
Edutopia - This site takes the community environment to a whole new level. You'll find groups dedicated to your subject matter. You'll see top teaching headlines and innovative teaching strategies, as well.
You can browse by your grade level or examine strategies that work for all grades. The site is full of interesting articles from fellow educators that promote new ideas and theories.
Edutopia takes on the full education experience. Articles aren't just about teaching, but raising school spirit and connecting with children on an emotional level. Connecting on a personal level is vital to education; this site makes that easier.
Diigo - If you want more than a simple bookmarking tool, Diigo is for you!
Compared with other bookmarking tools, Diigo enables you to do so much more. Period. If you read a lot digitally, Diigo is for you! Compared with other information management tools, Diigo is differentiated by its focus on e-reading.

These tools may be adapted to any level of students.

How to Get 83GB of Free Cloud Storage

http://dealnews.com/features/How-to-Get-83-GB-of-Free-Cloud-Storage/786888.html

 By Simon Hill, dealnews contributor

Storing files in the cloud allows for anytime, anywhere access; no baggage (read: USB thumb drives) required. All you need to store photos, videos, essays, research, spreadsheets, and whatever else you've created is a login and a password, and a device with an internet connection. If you're smart about it, you won't pay a penny for up to 83GB of cloud storage space.

Get Up to 83GB of Free Cloud Storage Space

The cloud storage business is very competitive, and as a result, there are a variety of enticing offers designed to capture user loyalty. All of the major cloud storage players (and a few minor ones) offer free sign-ups and up to 15GB of cloud storage space at absolutely no cost. Instead of shelling out for a 10GB plan, it's more economical to sign up for multiple accounts with different providers and claim your free allowances. Not sure where to start uploading to? Here's a list of free cloud storage options and the amount of free storage available:
Total Free Cloud Storage: 83GB … and this isn't an exhaustive list.

How to Choose the Right Cloud Storage Service

Unfortunately, some of the aforementioned services have usage caveats. Apple's iCloud service is the most restrictive of the bunch: users need to have an Apple account and an Apple device in order to use iCloud, and while Google Drive offers a generous 15GB of free cloud storage, that's a shared amount of which Gmail archives and Google+ photos take a bite out of. The majority of these free cloud storage options can be accessed via any computer, and many of them offer support for all the major mobile platforms as well.
Sometimes it's not just about quantity of storage and easy access. In today's always-on, share society, it has become important to also conveniently share files and collaborate on projects. Fortunately, there are some free cloud storage services tailored to meet these needs. Of the lot, Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive offer respectable document support allowing for real-time collaboration, and as each is a part of a larger suite of apps, there is a sense of synergy and ease associated with both services.

83GB of Free Cloud Storage Not Enough?

Before paying for extra cloud storage space, consider signing up for multiple accounts to take advantage of all the free goodness. It's also worth remembering that providers like Dropbox and Cubby offer extra free space when you refer someone and they sign up. Dropbox offers an additional 500MB per referral up to 16GB, and Cubby doles out 1GB per referral up to 20GB.
If you do hit a storage capacity ceiling and you need more space, look into the costs of your favorite provider's premium cloud storage packages, and check out our cloud storage guide for some handy price comparisons. If you want a simple proposition then Carbonite offers unlimited cloud storage for $60 per year.

With Multiple Cloud Accounts, Organization is Key

In order to really reap the rewards of all this free cloud storage an organizational system is imperative. It doesn't have to be complex, but it should factor in how to make the most of each specific service.
We suggest using one or two solutions for all your photos and personal videos, organized by date. Specifically, Dropbox features an automatic upload feature for photos and videos taken on a mobile device, which is a great way to ensure a backup copy of all your media. Dropbox also makes it easy to share files with other people, without necessarily having to go through Facebook or Google+.
For students, when it comes to class work, research assignments, and the like, it's smart to set up a virtual binder with proverbial dividers or folders to house all your files. An archive system that lets you organize files by date will help keep all of your storage even more organized and accessible as needed. To make the most of the free cloud storage allotments, opt for one service to house your current semester work, and use another to archive old, completed work.
Sure, classwork and photos are personal, but for even more sensitive information, assign this content to a different account. Separating your documents and storing them in different locations reduces the risk of accidentally exposing anything you might prefer to keep private.
With the knowledge of where to find free cloud storage, and an organizational system in place that de-clutters your digital life, there's no reason not to move everything to the cloud. Plus, with a master password (and a backup of all your files), you can keep information accessible and never have to pay a penny for the privilege.
